It's the little things in life

For days, I have been meaning to put down a list of things that have brought me much joy recently. It took a rainy day like yesterday, ironically one of the happiest days of late, to jot down some of my favourites:

#1: I've had my fair share of mille-feuille and why it took me this long to try Lady M, I will never know. The mille crêpes look like they are made out of a thousand layers and even though all I could manage after dinner last night was a single slice, it really was the best I have ever had.

#2. Which brings me to the next love on the list. Anything located behind a "secret" door or in an unmarked location usually doesn't live up to hype (Employees Only aside). I was pleasantly surprised by Pulqueria, which lay at the bottom of a flight of stairs in a quiet Chinatown alleyway.
Via. (Although Doyers is no longer there, the door at the bottom of the stairs remains unmarked)
Everything we had - from the gorditas, enchiladas and esquites to the refreshing pulque cocktails - was amazing. Though none of those topped the surprise candle on our churros plate in honour of the birthday girl. Their only clue being my exuberant greeting when Kate walked into the restaurant. Well played Pulqueria, well played.

#3: The rising popularity of gel manicures has resulted in no shortage of deals around the city. My latest at Valley was a welcome treat after spending an entire afternoon at the dentist. The manicurist must have known I was in need of some sparkle and gave my ring fingers a little extra attention.

#4: After seeing an online preview of H&M's January/February offerings, I couldn't get over this pretty number:

Thus I became a woman on a mission, stalking the 2 stores that are within minutes of my apartment EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. It only took 6 weeks ...
I bought the green version months back. Although I rarely buy anything in multiples, I made an exception this time. I mean look at the damn thing, pale peach and mint?!

My new Warby Parkers were supposed to be my #5 but alas the fit is a bit off - which really annoys me having done an at-home try on AS WELL AS a visit to the showroom. I am hoping the adjustment scheduled over the weekend resolves the fit issues - otherwise I might have to conclude that I just have a wonky nose.

  1. I've always been curious about the gel manis but I typically change my color about once a week (usually do it myself) so I am always wondering if it is worth it to splurge on the gels.

Your nails do look fantastic though - and I adore those pencil skirts!

    1. Thanks Lisa! I am so harsh on my hands that non-gel manicures chip within a couple of days - which is hard to bear even when I do it myself. I ONLY do gels now since it does not cost much more than a normal mani (~~$19) and I don't mind having the same colour for 2-3 weeks. I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a go.

  2. What a great post! I think I am going to have to make a trip to Lady M...I'm glad the cake was intact when you got home! (Is that a Marimekko tablecloth I spy?)

I'm still shocked that you didn't tell Pulqueria it was my birthday. What a thoughtful touch on their part; I can't wait to go back already.

    1. I am planning to have cake for breakfast on Saturday - I can't wait!

Good eye! Unfortunately they were mere paper napkins. They usually only come on when we have guests but I figured cake to celebrate the leap year was a worthy occasion!

  4. My L.A.-native boyfriend is always griping about how hard it is to find decent Mexican food over here. We have a really good neighborhood Mexican dive, but I'll have to surprise him with a trip to Pulqueria!
Did you happen to notice if H&M had the sweater to match the skirt you bought? I'm a little obsessed with it...

    1. Good golly that sweater is magnificent! I didn't see it in the 6 weeks I was looking for the skirt. Since then I have not been in store much either - will commence stalking this sweater for us both today!

    1. Thanks Lexi - it's been a rough week now that I have a cold - a nice manicure somehow makes it just that bit better.

  8. The cream and mint polka dot skirt reminds me of Essie Sand Tropaz and Navigate Her; Try the nail polish this way, exact replica!
